The main producers of this oil are Indonesia and China, which together produce about 40% of the world’s citronella essential oil.

In addition to being beneficial for the skin as an insect repellent, the oil works well against excessive sweating, oily skin and hair, and acts as a deodorant. It is said to relieve pain caused by rheumatism and arthritis and ward off flu, colds and minor infections. The oil is good for the digestive system to treat colitis and intestinal infections and to get rid of intestinal parasites. It relieves menstrual cramps and pain and speeds it up heartbeats. When used in a vaporizer, it is said to help dispel fatigue, headaches, and neuralgia, and create a happy, optimistic mood. Avoid use during pregnancy and in children under 3 years of age. Do not consume internally.

Ancient cultures in India, Egypt and other places where herbs of the Cymbopogon family grew used them to repel insects, especially mosquitoes. In those times, people settled near rivers and water bodies. While this was good in many ways, it also meant an abundance of insects and mosquitoes that brought disease and killed people. Thus, the use of this grass as a control agent was a matter of life and death at that time.
