Citronella oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and stems of plants in the Cymbopogon genus, particularly Cymbopogon nardus. Citronella essential oil is known as a herbal insect repellent, a biopesticide with a non-toxic mechanism of action, and has been registered for this use in the US since 1948. The main producers of this oil are Indonesia and China, which together produce about 40% of the world’s citronella essential oil.

In addition to being beneficial for the skin as an insect repellent, the oil works well against excessive sweating, oily skin and hair, and acts as a deodorant. It is said to relieve pain caused by rheumatism and arthritis and ward off flu, colds and minor infections. The oil is good for the digestive system to treat colitis, intestinal infections and get rid of intestinal parasites. It relieves menstrual pains and cramps and speeds it up heart activity. When used in a vaporizer, it is said to help dispel fatigue, headaches, and neuralgia, and create a happy, optimistic mood. Avoid use during pregnancy and in children under 3 years of age. Do not consume internally.
