Geranium essential oil has a strong floral aroma with hints of mint and apple. The main property of this oil is considered to be balancing and invigorating, and it is used to support both mental and physical balance.
Geranium essential oil is often used in skin care where it can help balance both oily and dry skin. It is also associated with mood balancing and relaxation. In folk medicine, geranium oil has been used to relieve various skin problems and discomforts. The strong aroma helps repel mosquitoes; a few drops added to shampoo can help get rid of lice.
Geraniums are believed to ward off evil spirits, so they were traditionally planted as hedges around houses. The plants originate from South Africa, Réunion, Madagascar, Egypt and Morocco and reached European countries in the 17th century. Although there are about 700 species of plants, only 10 species produce useful amounts of essential oil. Varieties grown in gardens usually produce too little oil to be used for extraction.
