An essential oil is obtained from Roman chamomile, which is light blue in color when fresh. It can be extracted from the flowers and upper parts of the plant. The oil is traditionally credited with soothing properties and is believed to relieve irritation and impatience and may support PMS and other menstrual and menopausal issues. Roman chamomile is an evergreen plant with a fresh apple scent and is grown mainly in France, Belgium and in Eastern Europe. This herb is considered good for skin problems such as acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, dry or itchy skin and allergies. It is believed to be beneficial for stomach aches, gall bladder problems and throat infections and helps to relieve allergies, hay fever and asthma. As a diluted solution, this oil is used to soothe children during colic, irritability, diarrhea and teething. In an aroma lamp, it soothes headaches, nervous problems and migraines. Although this oil is gentle enough to be suitable for children and babies, always consult a professional before use. Chamomile was used for embalming corpses. Hippocrates, the great Greek physician, is said to have used chamomile as a medicinal herb. In mythology, chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs given to mortals by Wodan, the god of the underworld, to improve their lives.
