Hyssop essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and flowers of the hyssop bush.

Hyssop essential oil has traditionally been described as astringent, stimulant, antispasmodic, antirheumatic, antiseptic, carminative, scarifying, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, blood pressure-increasing, nervine, diaphoretic, tonic, antipyretic, anthelmintic, and wound healing.

As an antispasmodic, hyssop essential oil has traditionally been associated with the relief of respiratory spasms, including spasmodic coughs. It has also been associated with relief of nervous system spasms, cramps and muscle spasms, and relief of abdominal pain in intestinal spasms.

Because hyssop oil supports circulation, it has traditionally been associated with the relief of conditions associated with poor circulation, such as rheumatism, arthritis, gout, and swelling.

The oil supports digestion. As a stimulant, it promotes the secretion of gastric juices, including acids, enzymes and bile, which accelerates the breakdown of complex proteins, carbohydrates and other nutrients.
