Sage essential oil is obtained from the flowers and leaves of Salvia sclarea by steam distillation. This oil has a calming effect on the nervous system and is considered beneficial for women’s health complaints and ailments. It is traditionally believed to also be said to help with skin problems such as acne, boils and ulcers, and to relieve sore muscles and joints.
Sage can be helpful for those suffering from depression, stress and insomnia. It has been used to relieve women’s problems such as painful periods, irregular periods and childbirth. During menopause, this oil is believed to reduce hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, as well as headaches and dizziness. It has been used as an aphrodisiac. It is also good for digestion and kidneys. Sage oil should avoid while consuming alcohol as it may increase intoxication. Use in small amounts, as a large dose can cause headaches.
In the Middle Ages, salves were known as Oculus Christi, which meant ‘eye of Christ’. It was a highly valued medicine even back then. In Jamaica, local people used it to clean and cool ulcers and for eye infections. It is an expensive oil and has long been important and useful in aromatherapy and natural medicine.
